almost the new year

I haven't posted anything for a while..Well over a month.. anyway I was just doing some reading about Tracey Emin and I came across an interview she did for the Guardian online called 'Ghosts of my past', when Emin is talking about one of her drawings she says something that is really beautiful, but also something that I remember thinking a long while ago ..

'I wonder if drawings can be the imprints of our souls? Maybe some drawings existed before they were actually made, and they just float around in the ether like ghosts, waiting to appear on paper'..

The drawing she's talking about is called ' If I could just go back and start again' 1995

I really admire Emin's art work but she's someone I haven't looked at for a while, I like the energy in her work and how it is so often pretty raw and hard to think about...good stuff!

bird house

Here's the last for today..This is based on a dream I had a few nights ago. In my dream I was watching myself draw lots of squares and houses on a big sheet of paper..So I thought i'd play with my memory of it and see where it took me..here it is...

illustration friday - skinny

A drawing coloured in using gouache paint and then photo shop, mixed with a collage of flower photographs that I took whilst on holiday in Devon...I like this one :-)

Illustration Friday -Fast

I have had no time recently and haven't done any drawing for 2 weeks..Last night I decided to think about some of the illustration Friday topics I've missed over the past few weeks. I did a quick drawing and came up with this. The word was 'Fast' and I was inspired by my sisters dog Luke who's a Saluki.
I quite like the result, although a more orange background may have been better? Anyway for now here it is... it reminds me of a page from a children's story book.

Illustration Friday - Pattern

I've been following the website 'Illustration Friday' for quite some time now. It's a really interesting site with links to lots of artists and illustrators blogs and websites. Every week they have a word that people illustrate and then you can send in your image and it gets published on the website. Last week the word was 'Pattern', I didn't get round to sending my image in but here's what I did...

In our last illustration class we had a go at abstract illustration, we were each given a section from a fable and asked to illustrate this using abstract shapes and basic colours. I was given 'The Wolf and the Lamb' to illustrate. This fable is basically about a wolf trying to think of a reason to eat a lamb that he has just come across for his supper....The section I was given to illustrate involved the wolf drinking at a spring, then noticing a lamb drinking lower down the hill, then the wolf kept coming up with reasons why he should eat the lamb and the lamb kept arguing his case for not being eaten...!

At first I found it quite difficult to make my wolf such a basic set of shapes and eventually my wolf was simply some jagged lines. My sheep ended up just being a cloud shape and I kept the scenery very basic. I do like this way of working and would like to explore it further.

Tuesday 29 September, second post

So I started an evening class in illustration 2 weeks ago, so far it's going really well and it is nice to draw with a bit of direction. During the first class we were given objects at random and asked to draw them in as many different ways as possible within a short space or time. One of my objects was an AV tape, anyway once we had drawn these images we had to give each image an adjective, here's one of my favorites.
I gave this image the word 'Tense'.

In our next class we were given two unrelated images and told to join them in a sequence of images.

I really liked my two images and felt excited about the ways that I could go with them. Here's what I came up with.

In the next class we will be experimenting with colour so I'll post the final images when they're in colour.

Tuesday 29th September

So here I am! I have been planning on putting together a blog for quite some time now, i'm planning on this being a place where I can put all my creative bit and bobbing together and hopefully then have a better view of it all! My art has changes quite considerably over the past 2 years since I graduated from my Fine Arts degree and I'm looking forward to exploring this new style and way of thinking. So here's some of the drawing's I've been putting together over the last few months...
